Outside My Door

Lake Michigan sand and sun are in my DNA. Growing up in a small town tucked in the dunes on the Lake’s eastern shore, the beach was my summer playground. Scalding sand, crashing waves and icy water were the constants of my youth. There, I came of age, watching sunsets and splitting six-packs on the hood of a car.

In 2015, a lifetime later, I moved to a high-rise on Chicago’s North Avenue Beach. While the lure of the apartment was its proximity to the Lake, I did not expect what I found on the beach outside my door: busy children, hot lovers, sandcastles, ladybugs. I found my childhood. The beach is timeless.
